Made it Home!

Sorry for delays in posting- I've been having too much fun and some internet problems! I'll try to post pictures once I find my camera cord!
The last week in Singapore was a blur.  Just when I thought it could wind down as things came to a close, it most definitely did not. Normally I take the 7:40am shuttle from the MRT station to base. However, Wednesday of my second to last week while up in the executive lounge of my hotel, I ran into a lieutenant and a few other fellows who were working on base for a week. Because they were special and doing high level cyber security, the base was providing 2 shuttles from my hotel to work each day. They left at the same time as I did but would arrive 30 minutes sooner! The lieutenant told me I could hitch a ride! I was so thankful! Because my usual shuttle group missed seeing me back-to-back days, a rumor started that I had left. When they figured out I was here- my social schedule boosted!

Friday night I went out with the SBT after bumming around their place doing laundry. Saturday I went along as Jon got his suits tailored. We then went straight on to the Singapore Women’s Tennis Exhibition. The Singapore Hilton was a sponsor so they had free VIP seats to give to guests. When the lounge staff asked me if I wanted to go, they said they figured I’d be free because I practically live here whereas most of their guests are “usually in town because they have something going on.” I felt so honored haha!

Our seats were valued at $300 a piece and came with a special entrance, lounge area and all the complimentary food, wine, beer, champagne that we could possibly want! I’d never been to a tennis tournament before, but this pampering would be hard to beat. We saw two matches, the second one being very exciting. #6 in the world, Sam Stosur, played against #20, Flavia Pennetta. Stosur won the first game in just 4 serves...it was looking like it was going to be a quick match. Pennetta eventually got her courage up and came back! She won the whole thing! Jon won was going for Pennetta because of her "nice personality" I was going for Stosur because of her sweet outfit. Our jokingly sparring made the match much more fun!

Jon had a friend, Ryan, from high school in town Saturday night. The guy was a private pilot and for visa reasons, had to leave Thailand for one night to be in Singapore. What a awesome coincidence! Immediately following the match we met up with him (he was staying across the street from my hotel) and had a great night out! We hit my favorite bar across the street, Muddy Murphy's before venturing over to the Orchard Towers. As they reunited they decided to bring over one of the ladies roaming around to have some fun. As I sat there watching this hooker flirt with them, I began to notice something....she was wearing a turtleneck, but when she laughed and leaned back a GIANT Adam's apple showed! I sat amused for awhile waiting for Jon or Ryan to notice but neither did. Finally, I decided to go swap my heavy purse full of tennis brochures and other junk for my evening appropriate clutch. My hotel was just across the street anyway. As I got up to leave, I whispered into Ryan's ear "your girl's a dude"....watched him and Jon both freak out and strolled away all amused as they tried to figure out how to ditch this ladyboy.

I got back to my room, switched purses, charged up my phone, and tried to get a hold of Jon but for some reason that we didn't find out until Tuesday, our phones were no longer texting or calling each other. The text would show sent but it never would get received. Not wanting to venture into a whore house for fun, I called it a night. It was already past midnight and I had been on the go all day. Plus the boys could go get into all the trouble they wanted with the ladyboys.
The next day I woke up and it was raining. I was going to go prawn fishing with Jon but our phones were still being weird. I was worried that something was wrong or that I pissed him off somehow. Either way, my plans were shot for the day, but luckily for you folk back home, it meant I got stuck Christmas/souvenir shopping.

That night, still in my rainy day funk/worrying about Jon, Janet came down to Orchard and we went over to Muddy Murphys. We met some fun British gentleman who had a shock-trick lighter and were quite the amusing bunch! The night ended in a "who's on first" kind of moment as I tried to close out the tab. The waitress kept asking for my last name, I kept saying Murphy, she kept saying that was the bar name...round and round but eventually I closed my tab.

Monday I woke up to more non-stop rain! I walked around malls but kept an overall low key afternoon. Geoffrey, the shuttle driver from base, offered to take me up to Malaysia for the evening. He picked me up and drove across the border. Even though this was my third time venturing over to Malaysia, I had never gone in a private vehicle. As you get close to the border, there are signs telling you to make sure you have 3/4 tank of gas. They don't want you sneaking over to the MUCH cheaper Malaysia and filling up there. They even check your gas gauge as you clear customs!

We got foot massages and dinner while in Johor Bahru. Geoffrey speaks 5 languages (claiming British and American as 2 distinct languages) and had fun messing with the Chinese masseuse by making up lies. We grabbed a good dinner, ate outside to the music of Shania Twain and Backstreet Boys as the restaurant closed down. Around midnight, when we were going to head back to Singapore, I decided to run back into the restaurant to use the restroom. Geoffrey waited outside and talked in Malay to the staff. When I came out, they gave me a SUPER excited waves goodbye. I friendly waved back to their gigantic smiling faces. When I got in the car, Geoffrey was smirking. I asked him what he made up this time. He said "they asked if you were a singer- so I said yes." I asked "why would you say that?" With a huge grin on his face, Geoffrey replied "I don't know what talents you have. Well they then asked if you were Adele- so I said yes. Then they asked how I knew you, so I said you were my girlfriend!" Haha oh Geoffrey! If you read any tabloid rumors of Adele at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Malaysia....it's probably false.

Tuesday night I went out with some friends to a comedy show. They were hosting some Argentinians who were couch surfing so I did some minimal translating. Mainly I just repeated the Indian English slower for the guys, occasionally I had to say stuff in Spanish. Of the 14 comedians who performed, most jokes were Angry Birds, iPhone or race related- still a fun experience seeing comedy somewhere else. Wednesday night I had my final night out with Janet. I will miss her! She was good company in both Singapore, the office and Thailand.

The week came to close with many goodbyes! Jon and I went out on my last night there to use the rest of my Sing money up. I returned to my hotel around 2:30am which I was ok with because I figured I'd be able to sleep on the plane. I double checked with the front desk about my 3:30am and 4:00am wake-up calls. I had given my phone to Jon so his wife could use it when she visited so I had no back-up alarm. Well, around 5am I woke up on my own. Totally panicked, I threw my stuff into my bag and sprinted out. I had originally planned on being in a taxi to the airport at 5:15am. I stumbled out of the elevator full of luggage, look at the front desk and the receptionist immediately started apologizing saying the whole wake-up system was down. He didn't even make me check-out, saying he'd email me a receipt and helped me into the cab.

The cab driver was AMAZING. He kept saying in his heavily accented English "no worry- you'll be home for Christmas!" He shaved 20 minutes off a 40 minute drive- I was so appreciative!

Everything from then on went smooth. I flew through Hong Kong and arrived in SFO around 10:30am on 12/23 to my mom and sisters! So good seeing them again!!

Singapore was a wonderful experience. I learned a lot, made new friends, tried new things and had waaay too much fun. At the end of the day though, I'm SO happy to be home!

Prabu Gets Married!

I had the honor of going to a coworker's wedding tonight. Prabu was having an arranged marriage. About a dozen other coworkers had been invited prior to my arrival in Singapore but Prabu one day casually invited me and I didn't want to feel like a wedding crasher. Well today, he called me all nervous about this arrangement and double-checked if I was coming. I felt compelled- weddings are so fun!

It was gorgeous! For not having been around each other much before, they seemed comfortable together. We sat at our tables, the bridal party and groom came in, then the bride. They ran through their thing, cut their cake, made the toast and then we were treated to a delicious Indian food buffet. Butter chicken- so good! It seemed like an express wedding- beautiful but fast! And a wardrobe change for both! Not much different than a Western wedding.

As they were circling around to all the tables, my crew of 9 decided to leave after the bride and groom stopped by our table. They were all sharing a cab back to Sembawang but my hotel was only a 2 mile walk. So I stayed, at my large table solo. People kept looking at me smiling, they'd come over and translate some toasts, explain to me who was who, I felt very special. Prabu kept smiling and thanked me for staying. The whole group was unbelievably hospitable! I'm glad I got to see it all happen- for my gang missed the bride singing and the groom dancing for her! I guess she's a very good singer and he never heard her before. After singing, she made him dance for her. Cute and funny! During Prabu's thank-you toast I got personally thanked; I couldn't believe I got a shout-out during his speech!. On my way out the bride's father asked if I could come back for the big church wedding in April. I felt so special and glad to be there! It was lovely!! Best of luck for the new couple!! I had a happy stroll back to my hotel and overall wonderful Thursday night!

Creep Alert

Now that I'm safe, this is a funny story; but on Sunday when it occurred, it was a scary time!!

My friend, Jon, is having some custom suits made for him while here. Apparently it's the thing to do. You can get thousands of dollars worth of suits tailored for much much cheaper than in the US- he's getting equivalent of two $6kish suits for less than $2k! So I tagged along to offer my expert advice in suits- since apparently I have those skills. It was fun; I had no idea that there were so many choices- fabric, number of flaps, pleat, pocket shape, button, collar designs, cuff links, embroidery, etc, etc. Let's just say, I'm glad I'm not a guy having to make these decisions. Jon's gonna end up looking sharp! I picked the blue for his collared shirt :)

So after our adventure in Chinatown, he drove us over to Little India to check out a 7 story tech store! It puts Best Buy and Fry's to shame! Endless places, any gadget you can imagine and you can barter! A tech nerd's dream! From there we headed over to Mustafa Center, the place every local says is good to shop. I got stared at SO MUCH just walking to and from the car. Sometimes Jon shot the guys looks like leave her alone, it was funny to see them freak. He even was becoming uncomfortable at how much I got gawked at! That part of town needs more girls!

Well after our unsuccessful Mustafa trip, we grabbed some ice cream back at the mall where his car was parked. Jon asked if I was gonna be ok exiting the mall on my way to the MRT. I told him no worries, people taking photos and staring at me happens often here (I did appreciate his concerned offer though). Never before had I felt unsafe until....

On the way to the MRT I walked past a Long John Silvers. Thanks to Caton from back home reminding me about the following scene in Hangover II during my Thailand trip, I thought it'd be funny to go there. Plus I'm getting pretty sick of "local food" (if ever offered, skip on the bee hoon- not a a good hoon).

At the start of my meal, a guy walked by and asked if he could sit a few seats over. I was at a long row of tables lined up next to each other so I said it wasn't a problem. Probably a little closer than I would sit next to someone, but people in general here get a little closer than I would.

I nibbled on my food, occupying myself with my phone playing the classic snake game- trying to not be rude to this man but not at all interested in engaging in a conversation. Meanwhile, this stranger starts going on and on about how awesome Australia is. After about 4 minutes I look up at him and say I'm not Australian. He asks me what my name is and instantly I spit out "Erica"...my go to lying name I guess. He was Daniel. I get up and leave most of my meal as he starts talking about Australia again and he goes "Erica wait, can I have your number?" I said I didn't give my number out. He looked sad, asked where I was going and I said to my "boyfriend's house" and took off walking as fast as I could through the mall. Well this 5'5" Asian guy jumps up and starts following me. I zig zag through stores, up and down floors as I get closer to the MRT station thinking I'm either going to come across mall security or ditch him at the train platform. Oh no, Daniel is quite determined to get Erica's number. I'm walking uber briskly and this midget is jogging to keep pace. I kid you not, he was running after me. After gawking at me all day guys, its time to stand up and stop him! But no- they just kept staring. Finally, I get to the platform, whip my pass out and go through. Daniel is still running by me asking where I was taking the train to. I remind him of my "boyfriend". No luck- he keeps asking for my number. Well the train platform is packed! Good crowd to lose him in if I wasn't the 2nd tallest person there. I duck my head down, attempt to blend in and practically run through the crowd. All of a sudden a train pulls up, I jump on and look back- NO DANIEL! Still super rattled I could finally could breathe! Never before had I been followed/chased in my life and I am hoping that it will never ever happen again.

Moral of the story- never go to any place ever mentioned in a Hangover movie- it does not lead to good things.

Holidazzle!

The holidays are coming! Singapore goes NUTS! For a country that has Hindu, Muslim and Christian folks, it totally decks out. My office has a myriad of trees and Orchard Road is all lit up!!!  Even with endless holiday cheer surrounding me, it's hard to feel like Christmas is a bit away when it's so bloody hot!!

Right next to my hotel

Orchard Road

Saturday night I went out with my friend Paddy. We strolled from my hotel about a mile down Orchard admiring all the gorgeous holiday lights. At one point, we came to a HUGE crowd staring up at something. We looked for quite awhile trying to figure out what was fascinating such a mass of folks but could not for the life of us figure out what it was. I was intrigued, Paddy did not seem to care. Having lived in Singapore for awhile now, he just kept saying "Asians take pictures of the weirdest things. I promise you, they're looking at the tree or crane." Eventually I surrendered to his crazy Asian theory and took a picture of them and walked on.

Still not totally convinced that ALL these people were whack jobs, I glanced up again about 15 yards down. TA-DA! Mystery solved, partial lunar eclipse! Paddy had never seen one before, so it was an exciting moment. Soon we joined in with all the crazy folks taking pictures too! Amazing that even a street that outshines the Vegas strip- the moon still shone through!

Mmmm...cockles

Wednesday after work I wasn't expecting to do much but right before I left one of my coworkers asked if I wanted to go out for local food. Unfortunately I did not have my camera- but thanks to Google, you can see some of the local delights I had the joy of trying.

First dish- char kway teow. When ordering it, Molly turned to me and asked if I wanted cockles in it. "Cockles? Whats a cockle?" She laughed shook her head and told the lady in her local Malay language to throw some cockles in. Later I would find out these were small clams masquerading as giant boogers. Mmm mmm good.

This dish itself was pretty good, save for the cockles and it's appearance. It looked like a pile of earthworms. In reality it was fried noodles in a spicy sauce with some veggies and other mysterious proteins. I've mastered the local way of eating- chopsticks in right hand, spoon in left. Even a lady at the hawker stand next to me came up and said she was going to get me a fork but saw I could use the chopsticks and then asked if I grew up in Asia. Yep, I'm practically a local now.

Molly doesn't drink anything while eating, but I needed something to wash those slippery cockles down. I got a local drink- sugar cane juice. The lady literally took two foot-long sugar canes and ground them through a juicer, strained the liquid and served it with ice. Not bad, very sweet, went ok with the char kway teow. Not a drink I will be regularly enjoying however, just too much sugar (I should have seen that coming).

Final dish- dessert- ice kachang. A local favorite. Now before I further describe it, look closely at the link below.

Did you see it? CORN! On a dessert? What the heck!! The best way to describe it is like a snow cone but fluffier, like real snow, covered in bright sugary syrups, with sugar coated corn on top and jello and beans hidden inside. Weird right? Who puts CORN on a dessert? It was quite a sugar rush and I barely made a dent in it, but now I can say I've mastered 2 more types of local food!

A few weeks ago during lunch I was taken out for a badung drink (rose flavored milk) with nasi padang (still a mystery). My coworkers ordered for me and I just dumbly stood there answering questions they asked. "Shark?" "No." "Potato?" "Yes."...The nasi padang dish ended up having chicken, potatoes, string beans, rice, lots of chili spice and a whole lot of 'I'm not sure what this is' moments. Some parts I really enjoyed!

I appreciate they ordering for me, and some of it is actually quite good. They're happy since they know I can handle spices and like to see my reaction when I'm drinking fruity bright pink milk drinks. Win-win for everyone.

Thursday night I went out shopping since that is what everyone does here. A bit depressing. Some stores include UK and USA sizes in addition to the local sizes. In case you are ever here, if you're a size 6 in the USA-you're a XXL.

Friday night was my work Christmas party. I went with the SBT. It was very nice! I won a wine gift basket playing categories. There were about 20 of us selected and we had to stand on stage and say a unique fruit each time. I could have gone on forever! They were all saying Asian fruits. I said persimmon and pomegranate. Always good to end the night a winner :)

12 days left!!!

Phuket- Day 3!

Day 3 was our extravagant splurge day! Knowing we had to be out of the hotel by midday yet our flight wasn't until 10pm, we decide to kill a majority of the day on huge boating and snorkeling trip out to the Phi Phi Islands (where the movie "The Beach" was filmed). They were gorgeous!! Some of the most beautiful islands I have ever seen!

We checked out in the morning, left our bags with the concierge and took the shuttle across to Phuket to the marina. From there we took off on our hour long, 40km, speedboat ride. The water wasn't rough but going that fast across the waves sure made for some hard splats against the water. Unfortunately the rocking boat didn't provide for good photo taking opportunities but here's a rough video as we approach Phi Phi.

We took pictures at various stops before having an half hour at the first beach. Then we headed over to Monkey Beach where we weren't allowed to alight, because "the monkeys have rabies" yet they fed the monkeys bananas and encouraged them to come up onto the boat! Makes a lot of sense.
Monkey photos have become a majority of this blog!

From there we went on to our first snorkeling spot. The crew on the boat LOVED throwing bread onto my back so I'd get mobbed by fish. I'd look up and they all were laughing. Other people had bread tossed in front of them- I got this special fish mauling treatment :) From the video I posted a week ago (and below) you can hear me laughing through the snorkel while having fish swim into my legs.
Where Vikings landed

The lagoon our boat was "too big to enter"

First 30 hour stop.

This guy filmed me the ENTIRE trip. Not creepy at all.

After snorkeling, we stopped by a resort and took a nice hour long lunch break. Here is where I discovered my supposedly water-proof camera was not cooperating. It would not turn on! It's back to working now, but for the rest of the day I didn't get to take any pictures unfortunately. The last stop after lunch had some of the best snorkeling I had ever seen!

After about 7.5 hours out a sea, our boat returned to the marina and we got shuttled back to our hotel. Having no hotel room, we took some towels from the pool area and cleaned off like homeless bums at the pool shower then went and changed in the lobby bathroom. It worked, we were fresh enough , and bartered for a cab to the airport.

At about 1:30am I was back safely in my hotel room in Singapore. I was tired the next day at work having only slept a few hours, but Phuket was AMAZING and I would totally recommend it! It wasn't as rough as Bali, it had some of the nicest people, the local folks had a great sense of humor and it had an awesome relaxed beachy feel!

I can't wait to someday be able to explore the other parts of Thailand!!
